FAQs

Frequently asked questions:

Who Can Join?

Any currently enrolled student at the Colorado School of Mines. We are an inclusive group, open to all Mines students, and we welcome you to become part of our amazing organization so that together we can pursue a common goal - leading through service to others.

Why Are Members 'Brothers' If APO Is Co-Ed?

APO uses the terms of brother and brotherhood as inclusive terms. Brotherhood is the spirit of friendship. It implies respect, honesty, and dependability. It means we overlook differences and emphasis similarities as we join together in unselfish service. It means listening to brothers whose views on issues might differ from our own. It means working closely with people whom under other circumstances we might not chose as our friends. In APO we are more than friends...we are brothers.

Why Should I Join?

College should be more than the acquisition of facts and figures; it also should broaden your experiences, expand and test your inherent abilities, and sharpen your social skills. Alpha Phi Omega, through its unique program of leadership, friendship, and service, can add this necessary but often lacking aspect of college life, and at the same time enable you to help others while helping yourself.

How Do I Join?

Students become members of Alpha Phi Omega by participating in our semesterly pledge program. This program is a time period for students that are interested in becoming a member to learn more about our Fraternity and our chapter. During this program, pledges are asked to attend weekly chapter and pledge meetings and to complete leadership, fellowship, and service requirements equivalent to that of our active members. Upon successful completion of the program all pledges become members of Alpha Phi Omega. We hold our recruitment week within the first few weeks of each semester, which culminates in the start of the pledge program for that semester. However, students interested in joining, or simply learning more about us, are free to participate in most of our events throughout the year.

Do I Have to be Invited to Join?

Everyone is invited to join Alpha Phi Omega! Although we use a recruitment week and pledge program format similar to social fraternities and sororities, you do not have to be specifically invited to pledge. Everyone is welcome and there is no size limit on our pledge classes.

Why Doesn't Alpha Phi Omega Have a Fraternity House?

Alpha Phi Omega is unique; it is a "service" fraternity. We use the concepts of fraternalism as a means of providing service to our community, campus, the nation and our Fraternity. The fact that our meetings are held in campus meeting rooms does not decrease our sense of brotherhood. In addition, since we are unique, we have no conflict with social fraternities or sororities - all are welcome as members of Alpha Phi Omega.

Does Alpha Phi Omega Haze?

Absolutely not! We are a very diverse and inclusive group that places the highest value on the dignity of all of our members. Our focus is on developing ourselves while helping others. There is no room in Alpha Phi Omega for hazing.

We invite you to learn more about Alpha Phi Omega and how you can become part of our Fraternity by contacting us at join@apo-mupi.org, participating in our recruitment week, or chatting with any of our members you may see on campus.
